What does the world look like through the eyes of a leaf that has fallen to the ground?
There are songs about life. There are songs about loss. And every once in a while, there are songs that remind us that change is simply part of being alive. From Brinker James' debut album, Wooden Shield, comes “Fallen.” The song is told from an unusual perspective: a leaf preparing to return to the earth.
“I can no longer resist
The pull of the earth
As I prepare to go
I question my worth”
As the seasons pass, the leaf watches its descendants continue to grow above while it and its siblings become one with the ground below. It is a song about realizing that nothing stays the same forever. But “Fallen” is not simply a song about loss. There is something hopeful in the idea that endings can also be part of a larger cycle. Seasons change. Things fall. The natural world continues. New life eventually grows.
The song captures something many of us experience in our own lives: the difficulty of letting go, the sadness of change, and the hope that something meaningful can remain even after a chapter has ended. One of the lyrics is a powerful closing thought:
“Godspeed, my brothers.”
There is sadness, but also acceptance. Even in letting go, there is dignity. Even when something ends, it may still become part of something new.
When I created the cover artwork for Wooden Shield, the changing seasons and natural world became an important part of the visual story. Looking back at “Fallen,” I think that connection becomes even clearer. The album's forest is not frozen in a single moment. It is alive, changing, growing, and eventually letting go. And perhaps that is part of what makes the song resonate. “Fallen” touches on mortality, but it does not leave us there. It invites us to consider change, acceptance, renewal, and the possibility that letting go can be part of moving forward.
