She felt the quiet power of roots deep in the earth and the fearless reach of branches stretching toward the horizon. It was in that stillness that she realized she was no longer waiting to be healed, because she had become the healer.

I step into the forest and feel my shoulders soften as the air turns cool and clean, the ground whispering with the crunch of leaves under my boots while a pale birch rises ahead of me like a quiet guardian, its branches holding a warm glow of gold and ember red that seems to breathe with the season. In that moment the noise I carried in fades, replaced by the steady rhythm of my steps and the gentle hush of wind moving through the trees, reminding me that nothing needs to be rushed and that it is safe to simply be here. I run my fingers along the smooth bark, notice the faint scent of damp earth and sunlight, and feel a small kind of magic where worries loosen their grip and my thoughts find space to settle. 

When was the last time you let a walk in nature slow your breath and remind you that you belong to something larger and kinder than whatever you are carrying right now?

I froze on the trail when I spotted the owl perched among branches. Its eyes locked onto mine with startling intensity, and it let out a sharp squawk that cut through the quiet air. I could hear every rustle of leaves around me and felt as though I had stepped into a place where the ordinary rules of the world no longer applied.

I stayed there longer than I expected, meeting its gaze and feeling an unexpected sense of connection instead of unease. The cool breeze brushed my cheeks while the owl watched me as if it had been waiting for me to arrive. That brief encounter left me feeling calmer, more present, and strangely reminded that moments of wonder still exist in everyday life.

🧠 June is Dementia Awareness Month 🧠

More than 55 million people worldwide are living with dementia, including Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. Most of us know someone whose life has been touched by memory loss or cognitive decline.

This piece reflects on the vulnerability of the aging brain and the subtle, and sometimes not-so-subtle, changes that can emerge when cognitive function begins to decline.

Some signs and symptoms that may occur include:

Cognitive & Communication Changes

• Increasingly tangential speech, where a person drifts far from the original topic and struggles to return to it
• Difficulty finding words or using them correctly
• Mispronouncing words, leaving them unfinished, or substituting incorrect or nonsensical words
• Difficulty organizing thoughts and maintaining logical, coherent conversations
• Memory loss, especially involving recent events or conversations
• Confusion about time, place, or people
• Noticeable changes in communication style or sentence complexity compared with the person's earlier baseline

Behavioral & Emotional Changes

• Angry outbursts stemming from confusion, fear, frustration, or difficulty processing information
• Difficulty regulating emotions or controlling temper
• Personality changes, such as increased anxiety, apathy, suspiciousness, or impulsivity
• Changes in relationships and social interactions
• Episodes of unusual behavior, disengagement, or periods of seeming disconnected from the surrounding environment

Other Possible Symptoms

• Falling asleep in public.
• Fixation on particular objects, ideas, or activities, like a golf obsession. 
• Short attention span and difficulty concentrating
• Difficulty with planning, decision-making, and judgment
• Problems with spatial awareness and orientation
• Changes in grooming, posture, facial expression, or gait

Early-Onset Dementia

Symptoms can sometimes appear before age 65. For some individuals, the changes may progress rapidly and significantly affect work, relationships, and daily functioning.

Dementia doesn't just affect memory. It can alter language, personality, behavior, emotional regulation, and a person's ability to communicate and connect with the world around them. Recognizing the signs and responding with compassion can make a meaningful difference for those living with cognitive decline and for the people who care about them.

I was walking through the woods when I heard the cheerful song of a Robin drifting through the trees. A few moments later, I spotted its warm orange chest glowing against the fresh green leaves. It struck me how often I rush through life believing I should know more, do more, and become more before I can appreciate where I am right now. The robin seemed to disagree. It simply sang. It simply showed up. That small encounter was a reminder that growth does not begin when we finally become enough. It begins when we pay attention.

Do you sometimes feel like you are still becoming the person you want to be, this little piece can serve as a gentle companion on that journey. You do not need to have everything figured out before you start finding joy. Sometimes all it takes is a small reminder from a robin to lift your eyes and keep moving forward.
