This is what a love looks like in paint.  They wanted a "family portrait," but something more fun and emotional than a standard photograph.  After some discussion, we decided on a cityscape with graffiti that symbolizes what they enjoy and value in life.

They and their five children created an extensive list of their beloved people, places, and things.  That inspired every detail of this large piece.  It's like a collage of experiences in their family's life.  Most are original and unique.  Others are from pop culture and other communities.  All of it is about their love of each other.

The "L" train rattles and squeals after a long day at work.  Chauffeured home while reading a book and looking at the road rage of traffic below.  The backs of building pass by with their tangle of power lines and wonky patios.  This city has two side: a facade to show the world and a place where the real work gets done.  The alleys are somehow beautifully utilitarian.

What do you notice about your neighborhood?  Is it full of natural beauty or manmade?  Are there trees or have they all been removed?  Can you get places by walking and/or biking or are you forced to drive everywhere?  Where we live is who we are.

This painting would look best in a space that is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, white, beige, grey, or wood

Los Angeles is an attractive beacon of optimism.  What started as a Spanish colony of 11 people has exploded into a population of 18.7 million people.  The Chinese came to build the railroads, African Americans seeking better opportunities after World War II, Koreans to be entrepreneurial shopkeepers, Latinos who founded and built the city, along with countless other people from around the globe.  Los Angeles' diversity and openness to the world has made it the 3rd largest metropolitan economy.  Behind the thin veneer of glamour is the hard work of millions of good people.

The crucible has been lit.  And the heat is intense.  The desire to dominate what is outside when we're unable to control what is inside.  How can you know the truth in the land of fairy tales?  Our medieval beliefs conflict with our modern reality.  What is poured into the crucible determines the outcome.

How are we alike?  Why should we care?  How do we benefit working together?  Choices have consequences.

This painting would great in a space that is dark red, orange, yellow, dark green, blue, purple, black, white, grey, beige, or wood.

The facades are freshly painted with well-manicured lawns and power-washed sidewalks.  Chicago takes pride in their design and architecture.  It's also the city of broad shoulders that understands the backbreaking work of digging itself out of the mud and into a world-class city.  The alley is where all the toil occurs to make life here possible.  Like a grapevine that has to struggle to make the perfect wine, this hidden utilitarian passage is what makes Chicago beautiful.

The narrow streets off La Rambla provide generous shade from the intense heat of the sun.  Catalunya is quiet except for a lone moped delivering meals.  Barcelona's cityscape is a gallery of Roman ruins from 8 BC, Gothic homes, Baroque palaces, opulent theatres, ancient artwork, and contemporary graffiti.  Above there are countless loving homes with tenderly cared-for patio gardens.  At eye level, murals on roll-up doors share the feelings and humor of the local citizens.

This painting would look best in a small-to-medium space that is red, ornage, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, white, grey, or wood.

It's so cold outside that the door handle has frost on the inside of the apartment.  I eat my toast as I put on my layers of clothing: thick socks, long johns, undershirt, and ski goggles so my eyes don't freeze waiting for the train.  I top off my thermos of coffee and grab a few office papers.  I prepare myself for the wind chill as I put on my hat coat and boots.  As, I open the door, I know it's going to be a great day as the landlord already cleared the sidewalk.
