On the Green of St. Andrews Golf Course

Brightscapes: The Way To Beauty

On the Green of St. Andrews Golf Course
acrylic paint on canvas board
5" x 7" (12.7 cm x 17.8 cm)

The final hole on the Old Course at St. Andrews Golf Course; "Cathedral of Golf."  In 1764, William St. Clair of Rosslyn decided to alter the course to have the standard 18-holes we have today.  And it has hosted 29 Open Championships since 1873.  That sense of history is felt with every footstep as I carry my golf bag down each fairway and over ancient bridges.  And I have a lot of time to ponder the days of yore when I'm in the "road bunker..."

This painting would look best in a space that is red, orange, yellow, dark green, dark blue, purple, black, white, grey, beige, or wood.

And every place he worked, he had his sketchbook with him and found ways to be actively creative. In 2014, Kraus became a full-time artist by establishing Mike Kraus Art. Since then, he has sold thousands of paintings that are displayed in nearly every state and dozens of countries. Currently, Kraus lives in Rochester, New York with his beautiful wife and goofy dog.

Your home is an extension of your personality.  And using original artwork is a great way to show that individuality.  With a little effort, you could greatly enhance your home's status by showcasing original art in your living spaces.  Here's a tip to consider when choosing artwork.

Trust your gut.  Buy what you love.  There's always room on your walls for something you love.  You are the one that will have to look at it every day.  The pieces you choose add life and dimension to your home.  They tell your friends, family, and guests who you are.  The artwork in your home should feel special to you.  If it doesn't, it's better to have an empty void until you find something that makes your heart burst.

What do you love?  Is there someone special in your life?  What do you do in your spare time?  When have you been the happiest?  What location is the most special spot in the world to you?  All things you should consider before making a purchase...  (more at: http://mikekraus.blogspot.com/p/how-to-use-original-artwork-in-your.html)

This painting would look best in a space that small, on a table or desk, intimate, or as a part of a gallery walls.  The suggested wall colors are red, orange, yellow, dark green, dark blue, purple, black, white, gray, or beige.

2013 PGA Championship Is In Town

 photo 100_6422a_zpse7ee1a8e.jpg
Megan and I were fortunate enough to head over to Oak Hill Country Club to watch a practice round before the 2013 PGA Championship.  Here's Steve Stricker teaching a few other guys how to putt.

Here's Ernie Els.  My favorite part of this photo is the homeowner in the purple shirt watching the action at the second hole from his backyard.

Either the signature 13th hole or the 10th.  For those who are interested in the course, here's a good map: http://www.democratandchronicle.com/section/PGA04/2013-PGA-Championship-Course-Map-Info

The Nicklaus Village.  Looks pretty swanky.  I know I could never afford hanging out here if they are selling Genny Light for $7.50 a can...

Tiger Woods is here somewhere.  Maybe it's his caddy.  Perhaps another golfer just stole his parking space.

Didn't expect to see this on one of the trees.  Should read, "Gerald Ford, President, Ardent supporter of golf, beer, and nachos.  D'oh."  I've been to a few parties at his childhood home.  The owners have an awesome collection of Ford photos that I wish I had copies of.

The Executive Suites.  Probably the most expensive place to watch golf on TV.

The famous Leaning Oak of Oak Hill.  It leans so much it needs a cane.

That's my journey as Rodney Dangerfield from Caddyshack.  There's been a ton of excitement about the PGA being in town.  Rumor has it that Tiger Woods and his caddy hang out at the Starbucks by our house.  Many other interesting places as well.

The Classy Kraus' of Rochester

Photobucket
This is Air Bud.  Who's Air Bud?  We didn't know either.  We just tried to play basketball at Cobbles Elementary and he'd steal the ball...

Photobucket
Genesee Waterways Center in Genesee Valley Park in Rochester.  Megan's work helped fund a regatta called the Diversity Invitational.

Photobucket
While we were waiting for the regatta to start, I saw this crazy tree in the park.  A bit tropical looking for this area.

Photobucket
Crew racing!

Photobucket
Here's my crew boat.

I believe this is the boat Megan's work bought.  I could be wrong though...

First of all, there's a "Professional Disc Golf Association."  Second, the "World Championship" was going on.  Third, this guy had a disc golf cart.  If I were in Buffalo I'd say "For Realz?"

Photobucket
We're still celebrating our first wedding anniversary.  This time, we had a free night stay at the Hyatt Rochester because that's where our reception was (if you remember).  We didn't get the Presidential Suite this time, but we still managed to have a good time...

Photobucket
It's amazingly difficult to take a picture of downtown Rochester without getting it full of empty parking spaces.  It's the difficult position many mid-sized cities have.  People won't come downtown unless there is more parking than in the suburbs.  But, people don't want to come downtown because it is boring since they bulldozed all the retail space to make parking lots.

Photobucket
Thanks Lindsay!  If you ever get the opportunity to work with her, you are very lucky!

Photobucket
Champagne and chocolate covered strawberries.  Oh la la!

Photobucket
Take note, to the Hyatt Corporation this is our official name.

Photobucket
Goodbye Midtown Plaza.  This was a urban renewal project in the 60s that closed off a bunch of streets and made a huge, windowless superblock indoor mall.  For my Michigan folk, think the old malls in downtown Muskegon and Grand Rapids which met the same fate.

Photobucket
Despite the whole Paetec situation, I think downtown is still heading in a much more stable and sustainable direction.

Photobucket
Goodbye Robocop Architecture.

Photobucket
The old Sibley Department Store.  This reminds me of the Merchandise Mart building in Chicago.  Under the right management, this place could be the crown jewel of Rochester.

Photobucket
Dinner at Scene on Main in the Hyatt.  Since we got married, they renovated the first few floors of the Hyatt and it's pretty swanky (and "IT'S OUR WEDDING COLORS!" as Megan pointed out immediately).  I believe this was called "Scene Snax"

Photobucket
This is the flatbread

Photobucket
The filet and fingerling fries.  I know it's in a hotel, but it is really super good food and you should go to it.  And, we happened to be there when the Tall Club had their convention, which meant that Megan and I were the shortest people there.

NOW FOR SOME BUSINESS:
BARKTOBER FEST 2011 is on September 24th in Egypt Park (next to Lollypop Farm) and I'm on The Dirty Dogs team.  So, please support me (and the homeless and abused animals of Lollypop Farm) by going to http://lollypop.kintera.org/barktoberfest/mike to make a donation!

That's it for now.  Megan's trying to make a cake with Rachel...
