Don't Forget the Outrun the Sun Race Against Melanoma!


The Outrun the Sun Race Against Melanoma is the largest evening event of its kind in America benefiting skin cancer education and melanoma research. The evening start time helps keep participants out of the sun's harsh daytime rays! The event includes a melanoma heroes recognition program, live music, refreshments, educational information booths, a Kids' Zone and more. This event engages people of all ages to run or walk for an important cause.

Outrun the Sun

Outrun the Sun was a huge success for Melanoma cancer research!  There were 588 participants that generated over $54,000.  Quite an impressive feat!

Mr. Gerald A. “Jerry” Kraus, Sr., age 81, passed away early Friday morning, June 12, 2009, at Heartwood Lodge in Ferrysburg. He was born September 8, 1927 in Muskegon to Carl and Nora “Josephine” (Ferrier) Kraus and lived in the area his entire life. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean Conflict. On July 25, 1953, he married the former Marlyn M. Duff in Muskegon and she survives him. Jerry worked 25 years as a postal carrier for the U.S. Post Office and retired in 1988. He later worked in the garden and produce departments for Meijer, Inc. Jerry was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Spring Lake and the Knights of Columbus George J. McCarthy Council #2975 in Grand Haven. SURVIVORS include his wife, Marlyn; 6 children, Kenneth Kraus of Muskegon, Joseph Kraus of Muskegon, Jerry (Dorothy) Kraus, Jr., of Edwardsville, IL, Maureen Johnson of Hudsonville, MI, Sharon (John) Thomas of Ft. Collins, CO, Suzanne (Greg) Tallarico of Wheat Ridge, CO; 7 grandchildren, Sean (Lori) Turner, Nick (Kayt) Kraus, Mike Kraus, Lisa Kraus, Mallory Turner, McKenna Pullen and Conner Pullen; 2 great-grandchildren, Evan Turner and Ella Kraus; 1 brother, Don (Katherine) Kraus of Muskegon; 2 sisters, Mary Mierle of Phoenix, AZ, Cecelia Galarneau of Muskegon; numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws from the Duff Family. He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother, Raymond Kraus.

MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be celebrated 11:00 AM Monday, June 15, 2009 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Spring Lake, with the Rev. Fr. Leonard A. Sudlik as celebrant.

VISITATION with Jerry’s family will be 2-4 and 6-8 PM Sunday at The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc., 6291 S. Harvey Street, (231) 798-1100. The Rosary will be prayed at 7:45 PM Sunday evening. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to Mass, 10-11 AM Monday at the church.
