Historic Four Corners of Penfield

 photo sc002c127c_zps15ef172a.jpg
These are some sketches of the Historic Four Corners of Penfield, which is where I live near the intersection of Penfield Rd and Five Mile Line Rd.  It's a place rich in history (which there is more detail about at: http://www.penfield.org/index.php?pr=dpt-historian-past) and a great place to walk with lots of small businesses and access to parks and trails.

An interesting blog about the Historic Four Corners of Penfield is: http://blogs.democratandchronicle.com/penfield/?p=2437.

One of my favorite buildings in the area is the iconic Wakan-Hubbard Masonic Temple (http://www.wakanhubbard.org/).  It's such a stately building.

Thanks for letting me share my neighborhood and sketches.

Outrun the Sun

Photobucket
Outrun the Sun was a huge success for Melanoma cancer research!  There were 588 participants that generated over $54,000.  Quite an impressive feat!

Congrats to everyone who organized the event.  You did a great job!

So Much Snow. So Very Much Snow...

Photobucket
Last I saw, we've received 41.7 inches of snow so far in 2010 in Rochester.  That's just 10 inches away from the record snowfall in December with expectations near 60 inches total for the month.  As for the "Golden Snowball Trophy" Syracuse is in the lead with 55 inches.  "What is this trophy?" you ask.  Well, it's a nature driven competition between Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, Binghamton, and Albany to see who gets the most snow.  Go to http://www.goldensnowball.blogspot.com/ for more information/

Photobucket
Oh bike.  How I won't see you until June.

Photobucket
It's been a long time since I've lived in a snowy climate.  Chicago gets snow, but not like Rochester or Muskegon.  What makes winter awful there is the bone chilling wind off the plains or Lake Michigan and the complete lack of wintertime activities because they have flat land as far as you can drive.  Maybe my wife will get me a sled for christmas...

So, I had 4 job interviews in a week.  All seemed to go well and were interesting in their own ways.  Certainly won't hear anything about them until after the holidays and the 2010 budgets are done.  Megan is out shopping tonight for gifts.  She'll be done by Modern Family is on.  Buffalo this weekend for dinner and It's A Wonderful Life on the big screen.

I'm off to draw some pictures or something...

Thanks Chicago and Welcome to Rochester!

First off, let me thank the MANY, MANY, MANY people and organizations in Chicago that have helped me over the years. The Art Institute of Chicago for the education and temp work. The Chicago Architecture Foundation for letting me help them in their store and tour department. To the American Institute of Architects for being great people. To Children's Memorial Foundation for being a great place to work and giving me more experience than I could have imagined. There are so many colleagues and friends to thank that I can't even begin. We loved Chicago, but we'll miss the people. We hope to keep in touch through email, facebook, and in person. Thanks!!! \

The Gong that won the hearts of people all over America. When I commented this was in the "givaway" pile on Megan's Facebook update, comments swarmed in to save it from finding a better home. It will be hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend with music guest T.I.

Our place for the evening at the Best Western in Elyria, Ohio. It had a nice bed and that's about all I used after packing the truck and driving several hours. There's a Denny's nearby with the friendliest server in the world works mornings. He looks like the Michael Cera.

Photobucket
Lovely Erie, Pennsylvania. It's strange to travel across America because you can drive over 600 miles and every town along the highway is exactly alike...

WE MADE IT TO ROCHESTER! Here's Megan's dad's dog Gerty the Ewok.

Photobucket
This about sums up Rochester for me: my wife, a dog, and the local drink of choice Genny Light (for Chicagoans: think PBR. For Michiganders; think Stroh's).

Photobucket
A cool Victorian house I found on my epic bike ride in suburban Rochester from Pittsford to Penfield. The distance isn't great, but the only connecting roads are highways without sidewalks or safe bike paths. So, I went down every side street, through lawns, over trails and rivers and learned a lot about biking on the east side...

Photobucket
Our temporary home, which is Megan's brother Rich's permanent place. So, a super big thanks goes to Rich for letting us steal his guest room, letting us watch the Bear beat the Packers?!?!, and generally interfere with his home life. Thanks and we are looking for apartments tonight.

That's about it for now. My email is the same. My facebook is the same. My cell phone is the same. The only thing is my address is different and will probably be changing again in a couple weeks. So, let me know if you plan on sending me something before you do...

Some Place Old. Some Place New. The Internet Is Finally Back.

Anyone remember when AT&T was a high tech company? It seems these days they've never heard of streamlining their services. To get the internet, it took 5 days, allegedly they sent out a technician 3 times (1 saw one once today who was very nice) and 45 minutes of repeating my account number. AT&T, let me give you some advice. Upgrade your operations because you wasted lots and lots of your time and money. If you own the internet, you might want to give it to your employees to use. Anyway...
